How to Listen to Become an All Star Mananger
Most managers listen to a problem or situation long enough to develop a solution then they are done. However as efficient as that seems it is a highly ineffective leadership approach. Why? One, you are making them dependent on you and you stifle their development. Do you really want to solve problems all day everyday. Does that not keep you from working on bigger more important projects?
Second you will never get to the root cause of a situation unless you give the topic enough of your time in understanding where it came from. Why not listen and solve the problem permanently. You may also uncover deeper seated issues that would have gone ignored without further discussion.
Last, many direct reports and peers just want to vent. Let them. Often you are giving them a tremendous favor by letting them hear themselves. You may not have to offer any direction. They problem solve in their own heads and for that, they will be grateful.
