Many, if not most, managers are promoted into a leadership role with little or no formal training. Here's the scenario. They were most likely a great team member. One that was respected and performed well. Your company needed a manager. Your selected this great employee and gave them the promotion. Now that they are a manager? Let me ask a question. Who is going to teach them the soft skills to be an effective leader? Where's the training to teach them to be an effective manager of people? 

The lack of training for newly promoted or emerging managers has a very long-term effect on your business and their career. In fact, it has created a business pandemic that is hard to ignore.

According to Gallup, over 50% of every employee who quits does so due to a poor manager. Further, Gallup reports that 2021 brought a record high of disengagement with employees showing that over 70% would leave their job tomorrow if a better offer came along. Again all tied back to poor leadership by the manager they are reporting to.

It takes time and effort to find the right people for your business. This is particularly apparent when hiring for a small or medium-sized business. Then to lose them due to poor management is a gigantic waste of resources, creating more difficulty scaling a successful business.

  1. They are taking Credit for others' work. Your team members see right through that and hate them for it.
  2. Poor communicator. They say things in ways that are hard to understand. They don't gain understanding or comprehension, or they give direction that conflicts with prior direction, etc. They speak in monologs and do not allow for any dialog.
  3. They are Hard-headed and Stubborn. If they want your opinion, they will give it to you. There is only one way, and it is their way.
  4. Poor Listener. Nothing drives a team member crazier than a boss who never allows them to finish a sentence before jumping in with their diatribe. They have two ears and one mouth, but they don't use them proportionately.
  5. They keep important information to themselves or only share it with a few and not all.
  6. They are not making deposits into the emotional bank account. All they do is withdraw. They only criticize and rarely recognize or show their appreciation.
  7. No empathy. If they can work late and seven days a week… everyone should.
  8. Talk about team members to other team members behind their backs.
  9. Say yes to everything they ask, even though they know everything can't be done. Then when things do not get done or go wrong, they blame the team members for not getting it all done.
  10. They don't take action with lousy team members. Even one bad team member can create dysfunction in a team. These bad bosses live with the problem team member, and the remainder of the team resents it. This lack of dealing with problems lowers team engagement and productivity for team members.
